Little Boy Blue

This evening it's my friend Hanna's baby shower. She's expecting a gorgeous baby boy at the beginning of November and I'm very excited - we have lots of fun things planned for tonight and I've been scouring my favourite blogs looking for ideas and inspiration... there are so many fun things that can be done to make this a super special event. So far this is what's up...

- the infamous chocolate quiz
- baby predictions - name, date, weight
- decorating baby vests
- food, food, food
- advice book
- games galore
- pressies

and I'm sure the girls have some other tricks up their sleeves!

I'll make sure to forward some pics afterwards... seems there's babies everywhere at the moment!

All has been quiet on the blogging front as I have adjusted to my new role as a Mother (adjusted sounds past tense - kinda like I've got it sorted now... don't be fooled!!) Ava arrived on August 22nd and is truly a gift of God. Such a joyous little bundle! I look at her and am in awe that such a perfect little person could have come from us. I am absolutely loving motherhood.

While I say that, I have to admit there is nothing else I have ever done that has left me so exhausted, uncertain and unsure... although I have always been a serious "baby-fan", the world of newborns has thrown me in at the deep end and I find myself questioning all the time...

"How do I know why she's crying?"
"When will I have one day where I'm not worrying about SOME little ailment?"
"How do I make sure I don't ruin her?!"

Oh the joys, well... I invite you along on the ride of motherhood as I make mistakes and rely on the grace of God to help me love this little Bubba well and bring her up in a way that brings glory to him.

Revealing Room 2... the small bedroom

Well, after tackling the lounge/kitchen/diner, next on our hit-list was the little room (which is soon to be transformed again into the nursery before the arrival of Bubba Sims... more pics to follow!!!) Anyway, as with all the other rooms, it started its life with us as a rather drab, outdated little room with grotty carpet, hideous yellow walls and an extremely ugly brown roller blind... despite all this, it seemed like it was all aesthetics... didn't seem like SUCH a big job...

That was until we pulled back the wallpaper to discover the back wall was covered in hideous, ugly, horrible to remove CORK TILES!!!! A NIGHTMARE to remove... bring in the girls; Emma, Kristin, Cheryl and myself all had a go with the sander...

Still, we battled through the cork and ended up with a lovely, cosy little bedroom for visiting guests...

Summer crafting ideas

At the moment, we're preparing for a summer craft evening at church. A few of us gals will get together with potential projects that we can introduce to the ladies of the neighbourhood.
I'm still in the thinking progress, but here's some ideas I thought might work...

1. Deco-hearts
Always lovely as door-hangers, decorations or simply just because. They are SO easy to make, a one hour project and pretty to display around the house...

2. Cute notice boards
Cheap corkboard from Wilkinsons... simply cover with wadding, lovely material and some ribbon and you have a lovely display board - great as gifts for people, or simply just to spoil yourself!

3. Teddy bears
Stolen from Tilda's "Sew pretty homestyle", these bears are beautiful and cute and I've just made one for the baby when it arrives! Actually a really quick project and very, very cute!

4. Placemats
I made these placemats last Christmas for my parents in law... easy to make, and a lovely gift or family heirloom to handdown - just make sure you use material that is easily washable as you are bound to get your dinner down them!

God in the mundane?

Ever pictured yourself heading into the rainforest to take the Gospel to an unreached people group? Imagined yourself as the writer of the up-and-coming Christian album? Sought to set up a new ministry that no-one has thought of before? All honourable aspirations, but if we’re honest, all tainted with a desire for self-glorification. Age 15, I wrote in my diary “I don’t want to be a Christian who sits around doing nothing for Jesus in mundane everyday life”.

There is something good in this – as children of the living God, we want to be actively seeking his glory, serving him wholeheartedly, prepared to sacrifice everything for the cause of the Gospel. We aspire to be the Pauls, the Josephs and the Moses’ of the Bible; the movers and shakers of our time. We fill our minds with the inspiring biographies of Whitfield and Moody, of Jim Elliot and Amy Carmichael and we long to be like them… why? Because we want God to be glorified? Or because we’re afraid that when we look back on our lives, we’ll think we’ve done nothing to change the world?

Kevin DeYoung, author of “Just do Something”, writes that; “for as long as we can remember, we have been destined for superstardom (…) We’ve been stuffed full of praise for mediocrity - we figure we should be able to be involved in the world’s troubles in a way that would make Bono proud. We want it all – all we need is for God to show us the way.”

As I’ve pondered this topic over the last few weeks, I have been made painfully aware of the selfish motivations that so often entangle my “godly ambitions”. I want to be recognised, admired and looked up to. I want my own glory… but that is not how the Gospel works. The mother who faithfully serves her husband and children - cooking their food, washing their clothes and nursing them through sickness, while modelling and teaching the servanthood of Christ, is just as godly a saint as the writer of the richest theology book. The businessman, who shows integrity in all his work, who refrains from office gossip, and earnestly prays for opportunities to show Jesus in all he does and says with his colleagues, is as much a missionary as the Amazon Gospel messenger. In essence, the question isn’t “what am I doing for Jesus?” but “who am I becoming for Jesus?”. If we are growing fruit, modelling christlikeness and seeking to honour him, the doing will follow.

My 15-year-old self was more concerned with what great achievement I would make for God than what great achievement he had made for me. I was (and often still am!) more concerned with the outward appearance of my service of Jesus that the inward workings of his Holy Spirit in me.

So let’s fill our prayers not with petitions to be achievers of great things, or even to do good things, but instead to be growing the fruit of the Spirit, to be transformed into the likeness of our Saviour, to be consumed by the Gospel of grace.

And if we do that, I have no doubt that the moving and shaking will follow anyway…

Out of the silence!

Well, silence on this end of the blogosphere has been for multiple reasons... I'm ashamed to admit it's been almost a year since my last post, but I have two very good reasons... I hope you'll forgive!

1. June - December was taken up with turning Grannyville into a home that I love. Its been a huge project, but over the next few days I'll walk you through the journey so far - if you're remotely interested, you'll get the house tour of our newly decorated home!

2. December was then taken over by the shock discovery that I was pregnant. I'm now 30 weeks and the waddle is beginning to set in. The "Bubba" is extremely active and I can't believe we only have 10 weeks until we meet the little one. God is very good.

I hope you'll understand the silence on this end - house and baby, fairly major changes in anyones book I guess, but its been a fun adventure and God is incredibly good to bless me with a beautiful home, a wonderful husband and a very active baby!!!

Photos of the transformation to follow... enjoy!

Before and After

As I said on Tuesday, DIY has taken over all our weekends for the past year... I thought you would appreciate a before and after tour. The chance to see what we've been up to... As I said, our long journey began in Grannyville... don't you just love the carpet???!

Well, the builders moved in in August and completely gutted our kitchen and lounge... it was rather chaotic for a while...

Once the builders left in October, there were walls to paint and floors to be laid... Mum and Dad were amazing and helped us totally transform the place...

Until, at the end of November, we stood back to admire our work...

We're very happy with our new open plan kitchen, diner, lounge...

Tomorrow I'll reveal our next project!!
