I am forever on the hunt for simple, healthy recipes that the children can get involved with. Cooking with little ones is risky business... it has the potential for disaster, stress and a lot of mess. But if the right recipes can be found, it can be a really unifying, fun, learning experience for everyone involved.
Note... ALWAYS get children to wash hands first... that way, when you are culling and editing your photos later and spot your one-year-old sneaking a handful of cheese from your artsy recipe flatlay, you know it really doesn't matter...
He's a cheeky one, that boy...
These pitta pizzas, are SUPER delicious, easy to make, very quick and each child can make their own, which means each child will, as a general rule, eat up the entirety of their dinner without any "I'm full"s or "I don't really like it"s... one of the perks of them having made it themselves!
Here's what you need to make six mini pizzas...
- 6 White Pitta Bread (less healthy than the brown alternative, but way more tasty we've found... why is that always the way?!)
- Quarter tin of pasata
- Cheese (we just used cheddar, but you could go fancy and use mozarella!)
- Half a red onion, chopped
- Half a yellow pepper, chopped,
- Half a jar of black olives, halved
- Oregano to season (trust me, this stuff makes it!)
You literally just pile the things on - pasata first, then cheese and then your toppings, meaning if you have everything laid out, the children can go to town on the toppings they like best...
Watch out if you have a little cheese fan - supervision most definitely necessary! (Also with the under 2s, they will attempt to stuff the same amount of topping in their mouth as they put on their pizza - simultaneously! Highly amusing to watch, but perhaps not so hygienic!)
Then just stand back and let them get on with it!
Of course, the outcome may not be as aesthetically pleasing as you perhaps would have done it yourself... but who gives a hoot. Look how happy and proud they are?!
And actually, I've discovered that once cooked, they look pretty appetising however crazy they look when they go in!! Just ten minutes at 180 degrees, and you have a rather delicious dinner ready to go.
Which will be devoured in a similarly short space of time...!
Why not give them a go?! Simple, healthy(ish), quick, fun for all the family... what more can a Mama want!?
These look great! We've got my stepson and nephew this weekend for dinner and I think this might be the perfect dinner for them!
