Nikolaus Abend

The landing was dark... By the door to their bedroom lay three little boots, empty and standing tall. Inside the bedroom, two little girls lay, covers to chins, eyes squeezed tight shut, and willing sleep to come.

It was Nikolaus Abend on Saturday Night!

As they slept sweetly, Nikolaus would come and fill those little boots with fruit, nuts and sweet treats, a tradition upheld in many European countries, and one which we have always delighted in with our little ones. It's the original St Nicholas story, and one which I've always loved for its simplicity... No extravagant gifts, no raucous celebration... Just a few raisins, a mandarin, a couple of chocolate coins and a few stickers, and a reminder that children really are grateful for the small things too!

And when they came down the stairs in the morning, those little boots were full of goodies...

The children opened their little goody bags in delight, before the usual cry of "Let's find Nico and Nati!", and they entered the lounge to find their little Kindness Elves had prepared a little extra special something...

An invitation for the children to make their own little Nikolaus bags for a friend each... and stickers, chocolates and fruits to fill them up with.

Thrilled is an understatement. I actually think they took more delight in making those little bags up, than they did in opening their own...

And one happy little chappy looked on while we read the story of the very first St Nikolaus!

And then we settled down to breakfast, and a celebration of the second Advent Sunday... the next instalment of the Christmas story was read, the Advent Candle lit, and a few carols and Christmas songs sung around the piano, and a lovely, long, lazy start to Sunday morning, before we bundled into the car for Church (rising early with small children does have its perks sometimes... you can get a lot down before 10.30am!)

A lovely little Sunday... and we are all very, very glad to have our Papa back home (perhaps me especially!)

Do you have any special Advent traditions to share?

Advent Day 16: Kindness Elf Inspiration 2

The girls are so excited to come downstairs every morning and discover what their little friends have been up to... our Kindness Elves have become a part of their morning routine...

Here's what our little friends have been up to in the wee hours this week...

MONDAY 8TH:
Shall we write your Christmas cards for your friends today?

TUESDAY 9TH
Your friends are coming to play today! Let's make some Christmas playdough, then they can take some home with them!

 WEDNESDAY 10TH
Did you know there are many people in our country who do not have enough to eat? Lets take some yummy food to Food Bank to help them!

THURSDAY 11TH
Shall we be kind to the birds today?
Let's go and feed them!

FRIDAY 12TH
A hug is the best medicine if you're sad...
Can you give a hug if you see someone sad today?

SATURDAY 13TH
It's party time!
Let's wrap up a nice present for the birthday girl!

SUNDAY 14TH
Today we're eating at Nanny and Grandpa's House!
Shall we see if we can help them get the roast dinner ready?
That would be REALLY kind!

As you can see, our Kindness Elves are keeping themselves busy coming up with new and creative ideas for being kind to people... not an easy task!
But I suppose that's their speciality!

Advent Day 11: How to really give this Christmas... Savouring the Season

If there's one thing I really want my girls to grasp about Christmas at this young age... its that Christmas is all about giving. Its about the greatest gift ever given, and its about taking every opportunity to give in the light of that.

Which is why we were so excited about our little adventure yesterday.

You see, after a bit of prompting from those cheeky Kindness Elves of ours, we stocked up on dry goods at Sainsbury's and headed to our local Food Bank.

Food Bank is a nationwide community project which provides emergency food supplies to people experiencing crisis in the UK... it could be an unexpected bill for people on a low income, or a sudden redundancy. Either way, the project relies on the local community to provide food to stock their shelves. You can find out exactly how it works here.

So yesterday afternoon, that is exactly what we did. We did some shelf snacking, with the aid of our elves of course!

There were two little girls in their element!

First job, weighing the food...
Next stop: Stacking the shelves!
Last stop: Devouring the chocolate coins the Kindness Elves left for us!
Foodbank is just one of the many ways we can teach our children about giving this year... really giving. The kind of giving where you don't get anything back, other than the joy of the act itself.

To find out where your local foodbank is, just check out their website.

And let's do some real giving this Christmas :-)

Advent Day 8: Kindness Elf Inspiration

It's been amazing to see how this little idea of one christian blogger a couple of years back has had a ripple affect across the UK. My Facebook Newsfeed is now full of photos of so many of YOUR Kindness Elves and all they are up to, and its so wonderful to see how many people are keen to teach their children that Christmas is about giving, not receiving.

Because after all, Christmas is when we were given the best gift of all.

And so I thought it would be fun to share a little Kindness Elf inspiration. Our elves, Nico and Nati, have returned again this year to get up to all sort of overnight antics, and are doing a great job at teaching our girls to look out and not in... to challenge instinctive selfish behaviour, and help them remember to care for others around them.

I'd love to hear what yours have been up to too! Leave your ideas in the comments... I'd be thrilled to pass them on to Nico and Nati...

And perhaps you can steal some of our ideas to pass on to your Kindness Elves too!

MONDAY 1ST:
We're back! And we've missed you!
We're so excited about sharing this Advent with you and we hope to be able to pass on a bit of love and joy this Christmas.
We've brought you a little gift! One chocolate coin for each of you, and one to give to a friend!
Nico and Nati xx

TUESDAY 2ND:
 Good morning!
We wanted to do something nice for you this morning, so we've made you breakfast!
Could you do something nice for someone today?
Nico and Nati xxx

WEDNESDAY 3RD:
Today we are looking after our sick friends.
If you see someone today who doesn't feel very well, can you help look after them?
Nico and Nati xx

THURSDAY 4TH:
Hi Ava and Heidi!
We've brought you a new game today - do you want to play with us?
Maybe later on you can invite someone to play with you?
Nico and Nati xxx

FRIDAY 5TH:
Hi Ava and Heidi!
Tomorrow, Papa's coming home!
Hurray!
Shall we make him a welcome home poster to show how much we've missed him?
Nico and Nati xxx

SATURDAY 6TH:
Today we're enjoying a little tea party!
It's St Nikolaus Day!
Shall we help Mama to make a hot flask of tea for Papa to take with us when we pick him up?
We believe he's coming home today!
Nico and Nati xxx

SUNDAY 7TH:
Dear girls'!
Did you know you can make lots of people very happy with your beautiful smiles?
So... brush your teeth and smile lots today!
Nico and Nati xxx

I wonder what they'll be up to this week?!
