Dear Annika - you're one!

Dear little Annika,

It is SUCH a gift to be writing this birthday letter. I thought my baby days were long behind me... but the Lord knew our (not so little!) family wasn't complete without you. What a wonderful journey this has been. From the moment we found out you were on your way, we have cherished every moment. You are truly loved... I'm not sure there's ever been such a doted on baby. Your big siblings are all besotted and would do anything for you. You reward them well - with funny faces, giddy giggles and beaming toothy grins. It is a joy to have you as part of our family, and it is a privilege to find myself taking this Mama ride for the fifth time round.

Dear Elias - you're 7!

Dear Li-Li,

Our super flexible, football-loving, Harry-Potter-mad bundle of fun. You are sweet natured, sensitive and kind bundled up in a flurry of activity and boyish mischief. You are the epitome of an oxymoron - gentle, yet wild - fun, yet serious - cuddly, yet active... you have ridiculous depths to your brain and often startle your Papa and I with the kind of questions you come out with.

You surprised us with an early arrival 7 years ago (6 weeks early - eek!) and you've been surprising us ever since!

Dear Heidi - you're 11!

Dear Heidi,

HAPPY 11TH BIRTHDAY! Hard to believe our two biggest girls are now well into double digits. How the years fly! It makes me more determined than ever to make the most of every minute. Having Annika now, and dressing her in some of your clothes, it feels like those days were yesterday - and yet a lifetime ago. Time is a funny thing.

Ava - you're 12!

Dear Ava,

Another year flown by - another year under our belts. As my body has been growing another little member of our family, so much of this pregnancy has felt eerily familiar to my pregnancy with you. The intense sickness, the tiredness, the teaching with a bump and snaffling ginger biscuits in the cupboard to keep the nausea at bay before facing a class of children. It feels somehow like the right kind of way to bookend our family. Our firstborn and our final. So similar in so many ways.

Dear Jonas - you're 8!

Dear Jonas,

Along comes another year and I ask the question again...

"What would you like to do for your birthday this year Jonas?"... and I get the same old answer!

"Play football Mama!"

Happy 5th Birthday Elias!

Our Elias - 5 years old!

Our space-mad, Lego-loving, mini theologian, arms-and-legs everywhere enthusiast turned 5. It now feels official that we are out of the baby zone and into the realm of full blown kids.

Poor Elias actually spent his birthday recovering from a bug the boys had as we travelled back from Wales on Thursday, so it turned out to be a low-key day with the family. Presents, birthday breakfast, the sharing of "what we love about Elias" around the table and a visit from the grandparents.

Happy 9th birthday our Heidi!

Dear Heidi,

Nine years old... our baby girl is definitely out of the little years now! It seems like a lifetime ago that they lifted you out, showed me your fuzzy dark head and shouted "It's a girl!"... the early days of your life were blissful. The newborn phase has always been super intense and emotional and hard... and yet somehow with you it felt easy. Perhaps the Lord allowed us that season of grace before the hard months that followed when you fell ill, but those first nine weeks were carefree and wonderful in every way.

Dear Ava... You're Five! // Letters to my Littles

Oh my girl!

How are you five?!

Five years ago, tonight, you entered the world and changed our world forever. You made us parents; you are the means by which God is teaching us what it means to be a Mama and a Papa... you are our first run, our testing of the waters... and you are so patient with us! I know we will make mistakes, I know we already do, but honestly, you challenge me every day with your gentleness and kindness and vibrancy. You love life... you love exploring, creating, adventuring. I love all of that about you. So much.

I write this on the eve of your fifth birthday and can't quite believe we are here. Five. It seems so grown up... we are now officially waving goodbye to those early years, and entering childhood with you in all its innocent, rollercoaster glory. Entering this new phase scares me somewhat. The little years are challenging, but they are where I feel safe and in control (to some degree)... childhood feels like every year is a further step towards independence, and I'm just not quite sure I'm ready for that yet... and yet I'm excited. Because with each passing year, I see more of who you are, and I feel more and more that we can talk, and share and laugh together, and I'm so excited to see how our relationship might grow and change as you develop your own thoughts, opinions and ideas about life.

I've been thinking a lot about your childhood recently... about the childhood I want for the three of you... Papa and I have been talking too. What matters? What is important? What kind of values do we want to instill in you? What kind of memories do we want you to have when you are older and look back? The world says so many things matter - the kind of clothes you wear... the kind of extra-curricular clubs you go to... your academic success... the kind of opportunities you have and the kind of things you are in to... and its so easy to get pulled along with the flow... to feel guilty that you aren't doing all the things your friends are, to feel pressured to push you in certain directions, to question yourself as a mother the whole time...

But you, Ava, you are a free spirit... a creative little soul who is always thinks outside the box. You are a problem solver and an optimist and I hope, so much, you always stay that way. You are happy to accept that you can be different without feeling the need to conform, and you have a quiet confidence that enables you to enter a room of complete strangers and make yourself at home.

And then you are a perfectionist too... you want things to be just right. Most of all, you want to do the right thing... you hate the thought that you are in the wrong, and you're learning, over time, how to cope with feeling that sense of failure or guilt. Slowly but surely, you are starting on the journey of understanding the beauty of grace... that you will make mistakes, that you will fail, that you will feel guilty at times (and that is a good thing!)... and yet that there is forgiveness and grace where repentance is born.

I love watching you with little children. You're like the Pied Piper of Hamlyn after church sometimes, with all the smaller children following you round that huge hall! You care for them with kindness and generous joy and they love you - not least your own little brother and sister.

Ava, we love you so much... we love the character God has gifted you with, and we love that you are eager, in these early years, to learn more about what it means to follow him. I'm so excited to see your character grow and flourish over the years, and to see time and maturity, joys and trials whittle that character into the young woman God designed you to be.

We pray every day that you will have a wonderful childhood - wild and free and innocent. That you will grow and explore with abandon the gifts that God has given you; that your character will grow in godliness, loving him and serving others with compassion and grace.

But most of all, we pray that you will know all your faults, failings and struggles are covered by the precious blood of the Saviour who gave his life, all those years ago, for someone even as little as you.

We love you darling girl.

Happy birthday.

Mama und Papa. xx

Dear Jonas... You're One! // Letters to my Littles

Oh my Jo-Jo...

How are we here already? One year down the line?! That little chubby bundle of joy that burst into our lives this time last year... That shock of blue after a world of pink is now so much part of us, of who we are as a family, that we really can't remember or comprehend life without you.

You are so very adored by all of us!

Our little explorer... Ever investigating, ever peering and searching and chewing on anything you can get your hands on. You will always beeline for the one thing I really don't want you to go for, and this week alone, I've had to clear tissues, soil and a plastic chocolate wrapper from your mouth. Everything is there to be explored, and I love watching you investigating... Scrunching your little nose up in the way that only you do. So full of expression. Our little bundle of joy.

That little white blond head stands in contrast to the golden locks of your sisters. and I often see it dart past me as you speed around the room on your knees. You are so fast at crawling now, and this week pulled yourself to standing for the first time. You are SO laid back, and are in no rush to speed through the milestones, and neither of us are in any rush to push you forwards... You are a third child after all, and we're both happy to keep you in the baby zone as long as possible!

You are truly a delight to be Mama to. Happy and chirpy and chatty and just so chilled out. This past week, you have become a bit more of a Mama's boy, and that clinginess is definitely hitting. But after two children have gone before, I know it's a passing phase, and perfectly typical for a one year old, and really, all I need to do is savour all the extra cuddles and enjoy the fact that you'd just love to be permanently attached to my hip at the moment!

It's hard to believe that when I write this letter next year, you'll most probably be walking and talking and showing signs of mischief and naughtiness. For now, you still feel very much like our baby, with your cute little teeth and your four words (Mama, Papa, Ba (ball) and A-ya (Ava)... We are going to soak up all these little moments

Honestly, Jonas? I felt a little bit daunted by the prospect of a son... After three years of girliness, suddenly having a boy to look after felt like a new challenge, one that I had no idea about! But you have made mothering a boy so easy, and truly are such a delight to each of us that I am loving being Mama every bit as much and feel so thankful to God for the honour of raising this little sunny personality!

My prayer for you, my darling boy, is that you will grow up to be a strong man of God, with firm convictions and true compassion for others. You are growing up in a broken world, a world that needs the goodness of the gospel, and I'm praying that you will have the courage and strength to share Jesus with others with gentleness and respect.

You are a gentle soul... A gentle soul that we love so very,  very much!

Happy first birthday our Jonas boy... We love you!

Mama and Papa xx

TWENTY-ONE!!!

This day was always going to make me feel old... The day my baby brother passes the threshold into adulthood... How can that chubby cheeked, forever-crying (!) little blue bundle be turning twenty-one?!

Happy birthday brother!

I thought a little letter for your "big" birthday would be fitting... And seeing as I'm not actually going to see you today (only a few more days!) I thought I'd put a little note on the blog... It's perhaps not as much a trip down memory lane as your 18th letter was, but I thought I'd go for a slightly different angle this time!

I found these photos the other day, and they made me chuckle... mainly because I remember taking them so clearly... just like it was yesterday... and I feel like I haven't changed at all - but, oh! How much you have! Still just a kid here - a little 11 year old.

I can't believe we are ten whole years later!

I always knew one day I would look up to you... And I definitely do. You pretty much tower over me now! But it's not just in height...

I admire your creativity... Both of us creatives, but in very different ways. You have an eye for a great composition, and you're a technical whizz. If I have an issue with anything technical or social media-related, you are my first port of call, and I can pretty much guarantee you'll be able to sort out my problem for me. I'm sure there was a time a while back where you'd come searching out my help and advice, these days it's pretty much reversed!

I admire your decisiveness and determination... Once you have an idea, you go for it. You sieze the moment and the sky really is the limit... You'll problem solve your way out of pretty much any situation and will always have an idea or a suggestion for a different way of doing things...

I admire your loyalty... You sit with me a few times a year and watch me move all my photos on to my hard drive... You do that because you know I won't do it unless you're sitting beside me, and then my laptop will crash and burn again and you'll have to come to my rescue. So you come and sit and watch me until the early hours of the morning, because basically I'm too scared I'll mess it up without you! You come home for every birthday, you prioritise our family, and you're such a fab Uncle to these littles of ours... They adore you!

I admire your desire to use your gifts for God's glory... You are good at what you do... Very good. And there's an exciting year ahead for you! I can't wait to see where God takes you or how he chooses to use you! Thank you for always being willing to use your gifts and abilities, your time and energy, to serve our church family. Treasure in heaven.

There is so much I have grown to admire and respect about you, but I think what I've loved most these past three years is that you've become not just a baby brother, but a good friend... I like to hear your opinion on things, you offer a different perspective, and you are wise beyond your years.

I'm looking forward to seeing where the next ten years takes us (and also slightly freaking out at the realisation that I'll be 40 then... FOURTY!

GAH!

Happy birthday Alby! Keep running the race... keep your eyes fixed on Jesus... live your life for an audience of one...

We're looking forward to seeing you at the weekend!

Love you lots,

Claire

And a pic I nicked of yours that proves you are no longer 11... (follow my brother on Instagram @alexrobinson_films ... he's worth a follow!)

HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY AL!!!!

Turning 60... Again!

Another milestone birthday in our family this weekend... Another celebration of sixty years. Another cake. Another rendition of "Happy Birthday". Another session of gift-giving.

This weekend, my Father turned 60.

Dad, I honestly feel so privileged to have had you as my father. From the tiniest dot, I was a Daddy's girl, launching myself at you the moment you came through the door in the evenings. All my memories of you, as I was growing up, are soundtracked with laughter... Play-fighting; barn-dancing round the living room; songs you would make up for, and about me, on the spot, guitar in hand; mammoth Lego sessions - creating Eiffel towers that touched the ceiling and factories with real, working conveyor belts; painting together, exploring together, and going on memory-laden adventures.

You have shown me the world - The Grand Canyon to the Colloseum, Indian Reservations to Amish farms, Lands End to John O Groats... You have taken me on some awesome adventures... Horseback riding in the Rockies, white-water-rafting, panning for gold, exploring the mines... Instilled in me a love of adventure and a curiosity about the world... Something I hope to pass on to my own children.

But you have passed on a much greater legacy than that, because you have always modelled striving for excellence in whatever you have put your hand to... Whether it be work, or church ministry, or family. You have raised us to work hard, to do our best, to be sacrificial and generous... You have sought to make much of Jesus, and sought to honour him in all you have done.  You have lived your life for the audience of one.

I am so grateful to have you as a role model!

Thank you for all that you've done for me over the years - for your sacrificial provision for me through my growing up years which meant I always felt secure and was able to have a carefree childhood - thank you for your wisdom as I have sat and chatted through countless worries, concerns and questions! Thank you for you never-failing support - for always encouraging me to strive for excellence, for pushing me... but not too hard, for praying for me, for encouraging me, for loving me.

Thank you!

Praying God will continue to use you, grow you, challenge and change you over these next sixty years, just has he has done in these past sixty years!

Lots and lots of love,

Claire x

Dear Heidi... You're 3!

Oh my Heidi-girl!! Where did those three years go?? They have flown so quickly in a whirlwind of you and your siblings, and yet life without you is such a distant memory that I can barely picture it. You have cemented your place in our little family. Your sister's best friend and choice play buddy, your baby brother's constant companion and live-in entertainer and our little ray of sunshine!

This year you have made that slightly bittersweet transition that leaves all parents thankful but left with a little heartache... You are no longer our baby girl, but a little lady in your own right. You no longer simply follow your big sister's whims and interests, but you have your own ideas, your own hobbies and your own vivid, and at times rather incredible, imagination!

You are our little adventurer... You love to play outside, and while away happy hours in your play house. I always imagined you would be our little tomboy, as you have always loved the great outdoors, and like a bit of rough and tumble, but you are definitely as into girly things as your sister is, if not more so and anything princess-related is an absolute win in your book. You are forever walking around in some princess outfit, belting out a Disney tune at the top of your lungs, and your favourite toys are little Disney figurines that Ava got for her birthday, but which you have played far more with!

The highlight of your week is your swimming lesson... You are our little water baby and swim the width of that pool backwards and forwards with the biggest grin on your face. It's been so nice to find something that you truly love, and you are thriving in it! I love to sit on the side of that pool and just watch your joyous little face!

This year, you took on a new role too... You are no longer just a little sister, but a big sister too. It's taken you a little while to find your way in that one, but you and Jonas have found a happy little place now. You have always adored him, perhaps a little overbearingly at times (!!) but as he's gotten bigger, the two of you have become such good little friends. He finds you utterly hilarious, and there's nothing you love more than making him laugh.

You love to be read to.... And your favourite books perhaps portray that cheeky sense of humour that you possess... You love to read about the mischievous toys in Enid Blyton books, you find my naughty little sister utterly hilarious and you delight in the wicked humour of "Max and Moritz"... We are reading "The Railway Children" aloud at bedtime at the moment, and I love watching your eyes blink slowly as you fall into a drowsy slumber. I'm sure you've only actually heard half the story as you seem to fall asleep in the middle of it, but you seem to know what's going on anyway!

We had a few more "trying" months towards the end of last year....just typical two-year-old behaviour... Testing boundaries, and not appreciating rules... but this past month it seems you have turned a corner and it's just so lovely. You are great company; helpful, chatty, and at times completely bonkers! You never cease to bring a smile to our faces!

I love being your Mama Heidi... You, just like Ava and Jonas, teach me new things every day. In your short three years, I have learnt so many life lessons... What it means to truly be thankful for what you've got, to cherish each moment, lean more on Jesus; you have taught me more patience and grace, and shown me the extent of my own sin too.

You have helped me know the Saviour better.

And I hope so much I can help you know him better too.

He is steadfast and certain, he loves you more than Mama and Papa ever could, and he has a plan for your life, little girl of mine. He knows every day before one of them even starts. Trust him. Give your life to him. Lean on him, and he'll show you the way to go. He doesn't promise an easy one, but he does promise peace, joy and his presence as you go.

We love you our Heidi girl...

Happy third birthday,

Mama xx

Sixty Years...

Sixty years ago, in a little hospital in rural Northern Ireland, a little baby girl came kicking and screaming into the world. I won't tell you what her mother's first comment about her baby's appearance was... lets just say her judgement was perhaps clouded by a few good hours of pain like she'd never felt before (although my grandmother always maintained it never hurt a bit! If only I'd inherited that gene!!) but the first words spoken about this new little life were not particularly complimentary!

Despite all that, the little girl was welcomed with open arms; the firstborn child of a farming couple living in a big house in the countryside, and the arrival of this child changed their lives forever. Parenthood does that to you. It changes the course of your life in so many ways, and little baby Anna Sophia no doubt changed the course of hers...

Two siblings followed over the next few years; a little boy, and then another little girl, and the idyllic country childhood was spent in the fields, under the trees with all kinds of imaginary play... there was "Bat club" and "Eggypeggy" language, there were copious tennis matches, and lots of make believe. It wasn't without its trials, no childhood is, but it was sheltered, and safe and remembered by those who were fortunate enough to experience it with a kind of fuzzy fondness that makes it hard to distinguish between reality and those ever-present rose-tinted glasses.

Needless to say, it was pretty idyllic.

Of course, the three little children grew up... the younger two perhaps more adventurous spirits dreamed of great adventures, of travelling abroad and seeing the world. Anna, however, preferred the comforts of home - contented with her little spot of Northern Ireland and never particularly desiring to move too far away.

Except then along came Bobby - an adventurous youngster with big dreams, and plans to move across the Irish Sea to seek work in London. They met on a christian holiday camp, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Two years later, Anna was crossing the Irish sea with him, newly wed, and waving goodbye to all the security and comfort she had known to follow this young aspiring engineer to England. It was all brand new - new country, new job, new home, new church, new accents. For a young woman who preferred to work away in the background, unassuming and quieter of nature, I can only imagine how daunting all the "newness" must have been.

But quiet and unassuming as she was, the young Anna never struggled to make friendships. She warmed people to her immediately, always a listening ear, always consistent and loyal and sacrificial with her time and energy.

And it wasn't long before she was to start that adventure which demands sacrifice more than any other.

In the summer of 1985, Anna became a mother.

It is said that some people are born teachers, some are born to be politicians, some are born to be businessmen and women. The signs are there from the youngest age... and no-one is surprised when the prophecy becomes fulfilled.

I think its fair to say Anna was born to be a mother.

I count it one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I know my siblings do too, that we were blessed to be the children of this particular young woman. My own childhood was filled with wonderful memories... the hours we would spend in the evening reading all those children's classics - "Little Women", "What Katy Did", "Heidi" and "Anne of Green Gables"... memories of coming home from school to the scent of dinner, Sunday afternoon walks, the clothes she knitted for my dolls. But more than what she did, I think the thing that stands out most about my Mum, was that she was always there. Many of my childhood memories are circled around my siblings, my wider family, my nextdoor neighbours and friends, but my mother's presence punctuates every memory I have. Always there... always with a listening ear, and just about the most sacrificial person you'll ever meet. I do not lie when I say my Mother has been my ultimate role model when it comes to bringing up my own children. She made mistakes, and owned them... listened to us, whatever time of night or day.... dropped what she was doing to run art overalls and forgotten pencil cases up to school... wore the same wardrobe for years in order to make sure we had clothes that fit us (and yet somehow always managed to look stylish - how?!?) She stayed home to look after us, and paid the cost of therefore allowing my Dad to move up the ranks of a more demanding job in order that she could stay at home with us. It certainly wasn't easy, with no family around to support, her own family hundreds of miles away... but she did it with grace, and sacrifice, and modelled to us daily the generous, sacrificial love that she herself had received from the Saviour.

My Mum with each of my babies
Perhaps the greatest gift my Mother has given to me is the display of a life lived for Jesus... the year I returned home from university, I so vividly remember finding my Mum, every morning, cup of coffee in hand, out in the conservatory pouring over the scriptures... little evidences of grace in every action - sacrifices made constantly for those around her; giving up her time, her energy, her husband's time and energy, giving up her own needs, giving up her rest for wherever there was a need.

People often tell me I get my copious energy from my Father. It's true, I do. But my Mother is right up there with him... she'll just be quietly beavering away, baking up a storm for someone in need, meeting up for a coffee with a friend who's struggling, being the most wonderful grandmother to my children, and a "surrogate" grandmother to many of my friends children too... She volunteers every week for hours, doing often unseen jobs, and never complains about feeling over-used or taken-for-granted. She is a listening ear, and is the first point of call for more people than she probably realises.

And today, she turns 60.

Sixty years glorifying God through a quiet, well-lived, unassuming life that has pointed all those around her to Jesus.

Mum, if I am half the woman of God you are, when I reach sixty, I will have reason to thank God indeed.

Thank you for always pointing me to Jesus. I love you!

Happy Birthday Mama!

Claire xx

PS - Sorry for announcing to the world how old you are!
